Restless Legs and Varicose Veins: Is There a Connection?

If your legs feel restless and uncomfortable at night, vein health may be part of the picture. There's a recognized overlap between venous disease and restless-legs symptoms.

What is restless legs syndrome?

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is an urge to move the legs, often with crawling or aching sensations that worsen in the evening and at rest. It can disrupt sleep and has several possible causes.

The venous connection

Studies have found that a meaningful share of people with restless-legs-type symptoms also have underlying venous reflux. The leg discomfort and need to move can overlap with the heaviness and aching of venous disease, and some patients report relief in restless-legs symptoms after their veins are treated.

How to tell what's driving your symptoms

Venous symptoms tend to improve with leg elevation and worsen after standing; they may come with visible varicose veins, swelling, or skin changes. A venous ultrasound can identify reflux. Our symptom checker can help you organize what you're feeling before a visit.

When to seek help

If restless legs disrupt your sleep — especially alongside leg heaviness, swelling, or visible veins — ask a clinician about evaluating both your veins and other RLS causes such as iron levels.

Frequently asked questions

Can varicose veins cause restless legs?

They don't directly cause RLS, but venous reflux can produce overlapping leg discomfort, and treating the veins helps some people.

Will vein treatment cure restless legs?

Not always — RLS has multiple causes. Some patients with venous reflux do see improvement after treatment, but results vary.

Should I see a vein specialist for restless legs?

If you also have leg heaviness, swelling, or visible veins, a venous evaluation is reasonable alongside a general RLS workup.
