Spider veins vs. reticular veins vs. varicose veins

Spider-vein appearance

Spider veins are usually small red, blue, or purple lines near the skin. They may branch like a tree or web and usually do not bulge.

Reticular-vein appearance

Reticular veins are often blue or green, wider than spider veins, and still generally flat. They may feed nearby surface clusters.

Varicose-vein appearance

Varicose veins are swollen and twisted veins just beneath the skin. Larger veins may look rope-like and make the skin bulge.

Contact a healthcare professional for bleeding, sores, significant skin color change, sudden worsening, or a vein that becomes swollen, red, warm, or very tender. Call emergency services for uncontrolled bleeding or symptoms such as chest pain or trouble breathing.
